Dan
Z Reinstein, MD MA(Cantab) FRCSC
Diplomat of the American Board of Ophthalmology
Dr. Reinstein is a board certified ophthalmologist specializing in refractive surgery. In his clinical practice he combines extensive post-doctorate fellowship sub-specialty training in refractive surgery, ophthalmic ultrasound, and ultrasound bioengineering as well as his experience as a research scientist in his field. His special interests include the systematization of surgical technique and the assessment and correction of the complications of refractive surgery.
Dr. Reinstein is the former Chief Medical Officer of LASIK Vision Corporation. During his tenure, the company grew to be not only the largest provider of laser vision correction services in the world, but the first multi-clinic system with a full outcomes and safety tracking system. Dr. Reinstein was responsible for the training and quality control of a body of 58 staff surgeons operating in 31 clinics under standardized protocols largely defined by his research on the safety and accuracy of LASIK. In addition to these responsibilities, Dr. Reinstein has performed well over 6,000 LASIK procedures, with an independently analyzed outstanding outcomes and safety record, and regularly teaches his techniques to surgeons internationally.
In research, Dr. Reinstein has led the development and use of a new 3D VHF digital ultrasound scanner that, for the first time, can provide thickness measurement of individual corneal layers with one-micron precision. He has pioneered the use of this technology, with a focus on the study of the healing responses within the cornea and analysis of the complications of refractive surgery. Because the VHF ultrasound technology can determine the exact anatomical basis for surface corneal irregularities, it provides unique information for the analysis of the optical complications of refractive surgery. The integration of epithelial thickness profiles, stromal surface shape, and residual stromal bed measurements are currently being utilized for the experimental customization of LASIK and PRK.
Dr. Dan Reinstein is the Medical Director of the Reinstein Institute, dedicated to providing the highest standards in care through forefront teaching and research in refractive surgery. Dr. Reinstein is also an Assistant Professor of Clinical Ophthalmology and the Research Director of Refractive Surgery at the Weill Medical College of Cornell University in New York. Dr. Reinstein is a former Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of Paris VI, France and has an ongoing appointment as Professeur AssociŽ at the Centre Hospitalier National d'Ophtalmologie des Quinze-Vingts, Paris - France's national ophthalmological referral center. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and Royal College of Surgeons of Canada.
Concurrently with his medical career Dr. Reinstein has been playing the saxophone for 25 years including two years of study at the Berklee College of Music, and he continues to play jazz on a regular basis.
